Lewiston and Auburn are customarily referred to as one entity, either as Lewburn or as LA. This is because the two little cities are just across the Androscoggin River from one another. Their histories, commercial and cultural interests are shared among all.

LA has its own interesting mix of shopping centers, strip malls and delightful, unique businesses of all sorts. As you approach the cities, commercial  activity intensifies until you find yourself in the heart of an historic urban center.

LA has a wonderful mix of a wide variety of ethnic, fusion, American, cutting edge, barbeque and almost any other kind of restaurant you might want.  Here is a handy reference:  http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g40708-Lewiston_Maine.html

Most of the smaller malls and the big Auburn Mall are on Route 4. You can take 202 all the way to Route 4 and turn right (north) but there is a convenient cut-off between the two, that spans the Androscoggin River with a beautiful bridge, and takes you right to the shopping area. Here is a map:

An alternative is to take a beautiful drive to LA by taking 219 west to 117 and driving down the ridge of the Turner Highlands until the road reconnects to Route 4. It is a scenic treasure with mountains on both sides, beautiful dairy farms, and a well maintained two lane road.

The stretch of strip malls along Route 4  contain everything from TJ Maxx to Craft Stores to the Auburn Cinema. Auburn Mall is the largest in LA.

Auburn Mall, on Route 4/Center Street, contains 36 stores, including

  • J.C. Penney
  • Bath & Body Works
  • Claires
  • General Nutrition
  • Kay Jewelers
  • Radio Shack
  • Super Shoes
